Showmax has been growing its movie and TV show catalog for some time now. This is a good move because we have always wanted to have access to more content, and materials that we can relate to. The past month has also proved to be the busiest for Showmax, which replenished its platform with new titles, teasers, and more original content.
So, what have we been watching, or what developments have the platform made so far? Glad you asked, and this is what we have so far learned:
Showmax has a bunch of international series in its catalog
The shows were uploaded onto the platform in May, and they include HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival (And Just Like That S01), And Just Like That to The Girl from Plainville, one of Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated Shows of 2022, to The Righteous Gemstones S2 to Women of the Movement, which tells the true story Emmett Till’s mother Mamie Till-Mobley, and much more.
There is an upcoming Kenyan thriller Igiza
Showmax revealed it was gearing up for four new original titles in Kenya in 2022. It has since released the teaser for Igiza, one of the four originals.
On 23 May 2022, the show premiered.
Set against the backdrop of Nairobi’s fashion industry and the money laundering business, Igiza is a story of revenge between twin sisters Linda and Nicole.
The Girl from Plainville
The Girl from Plainville, based on the infamous “texting suicide case” that shocked America, is now available to binge on Showmax.
More international shows
The platform has added more shows, from Peacemaker to Winning Time, Westworld S4 to Station Eleven, My Brilliant Friend to Uprising, Devils S2 to Law & Order: Organized Crime, and more.
Fans of the Law and Order franchise should be happy because the shows are usually very hard to come by on streaming platforms.
New reality series by Betty Kyallo
Kyallo Kulture, a new Kenyan reality series about Betty Kyallo and her sisters Mercy and Gloria, is set to premiere on Showmax on 17 June 2022.
The 13-part reality series will dive into the personal lives of Betty Kyallo, one of Kenya’s most prominent media personalities and a thriving entrepreneur, and her sisters, Mercy and Gloria Kyallo.
Sol Family and This Love were among the ten most-watched shows on Showmax in Kenya in 2020 and 2021 respectively but Eugene, the show’s creator says Kyallo Kulture’s major differentiator is that it is led by an all-female lead cast. “The show has also been produced by a predominantly female crew,” he adds. Overall, Eugene describes Kyallo Kulture as “emotional, funny, and entertaining, even as it delves deep into matters that a lot of women (and by extension, men) will relate to and empathize with.”
