If you are a Safaricom data or home fibre user, you might have noticed that your internet connection has been acting up for the better part of today. Well, you’re not alone as the Kenyan telco has now confirmed that it is experiencing downtime on two of its undersea cables that deliver intertraffic in and out of the country.
The telco adds that it has activated measures to minimise service interruption and keep you connected as it awaits the full restoration of those cables. This is an occurrence that seems to have also affected the company’s online services as the MySafaricom and M-PESA apps face interruptions as well.
This outage confirmation comes at a time when there have been reported internet outages in various parts of the country following the events of the protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
The outage also sounds quite similar to the one that took place in May where the Eastern African Submarine System (EASSy) and SEACOM cables were damaged causing an internet downtime across the East Africa region. The cables were later fixed and fully restored in June. However, we can hope that the damage to Safaricom’s cable isn’t as extensive.
