The Rise of Lucky Fish and Other Online Gambling Products in Kenya

Kenya has experienced a remarkable surge in online gambling, transforming into one of Africa’s most dynamic and lucrative betting markets. Internet users are flocking to specialised websites and mobile applications that offer online slots, table games, and betting on a variety of sports.

In what follows, we break down the rise of online gambling in Kenya, diving into popular products like slots and revisiting the current legislation that regulates these activities.

The Online Casino Games and Sport Betting in Kenya

In Kenya, online gambling’s massive growth is primarily attributed to rapid digitalization, widespread mobile phone penetration, and the increasing convenience of online platforms.

According to statistics shared by Slotegrator, already in 2019, 88% of bettors used their mobile phones to place wagers, a number that has only continued to increase in the past couple of years. This mobile-first approach is crucial, especially for residents in rural areas who often lack access to traditional land-based betting shops and casinos.

The proliferation of affordable smartphones and internet access has significantly lowered entry barriers, allowing Kenyans to engage in betting activities from almost anywhere. Mobile money services like M-Pesa have been particularly instrumental, enabling quick deposits and withdrawals. Cryptocurrency technology has also enabled users who own these digital coins to make fast transactions on specialized gambling sites like Bitcasino.io.

Beyond convenience, the market’s expansion is also driven by a diversification of online gambling options. While sports betting, particularly on European football leagues (from the English Premier League to the Spanish LaLiga), remains highly popular, the variety has expanded to include virtual games, live dealer games, and a broad array of traditional casino offerings like slots and table games. This caters to evolving player preferences and provides diverse engagement opportunities.

Lucky Fish and Other Online Slots Amassing Millions of Players Today

One of the most popular online casino products are slots, which have managed to connect with players due to their simplicity and accessibility. Among the most popular online slots that are capturing the attention of Kenyan and global players are Lucky Fish, Big Baz Bonanza, and Joker Stoker.

Lucky Fish

The Lucky Fish or Luckyfish casino slot by Wazdan is a video slot featuring 5 reels and 243 ways to win, offering a theoretical Return to Player (RTP) of 96.5%. This game incorporates several popular features designed to enhance gameplay. Players can benefit from a Wild symbol, which helps in forming winning combinations, and a Scatter symbol, often triggering bonus rounds. The slot also includes an Autoplay option for convenience and a Multiplier feature. What’s more, it offers Free Spins, providing additional opportunities for positive outcomes without placing new bets. With adjustable coin sizes ranging from 1 to 10, players can aim for a substantial jackpot of 1000.

Big Baz Bonanza

The fishing-themed Big Bass Bonanza slot, developed by Pragmatic Play, offers straightforward gameplay and a simple design, making it an accessible option for players. This video slot features a 5-reel, 10-line, and 3-row setup. It boasts a competitive Return to Player (RTP) rate of up to 96.71%. The game is notably optimized for mobile devices, ensuring ease of play on the go. While it focuses on entertaining action rather than a colossal jackpot, Big Bass Bonanza has become one of Pragmatic Play’s highly popular titles within its Big Bass series.

Joker Stoker

ndorphina’s Joker Stoker is a fiery classic fruit slot featuring several bonus elements. Players can use a Wild Joker symbol that substitutes for others and often appears stacked, alongside a Scatter symbol that triggers the Free Spins round. Landing 3, 4, or 5 Scatters awards 10, 20, or 30 free games respectively. With its vibrant, heated design across 5 reels, 4 rows, and 40 fixed paylines, Joker Stoker offers an RTP of 96.07%. It provides a maximum potential payout of 2,000x the stake.

The Current Online Gambling Landscape in Kenya: Is Allowed?

Online gambling regulation in Kenya, including everything from slots to sports betting, has been undergoing significant transformation, moving from a previously less regulated landscape towards a more structured framework. Historically, the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act of 1966 governed gambling activities in Kenya. While this Act provided some oversight for land-based operations, online gambling largely existed in a regulatory grey area.

However, Kenya has recently introduced comprehensive reforms aimed at tightening controls and enhancing oversight within its burgeoning gambling industry, particularly in the online sector. The proposed Gambling Control Bill of 2023, along with a related National Lottery Bill, signifies a landmark shift. Once fully enacted, this legislation is set to replace the existing Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) with a new, dedicated Gambling Regulatory Authority.

Key aspects of these new regulations include stricter licensing requirements, such as a mandatory minimum of 30% local ownership for gambling companies and the requirement for all transactions to be facilitated through Kenyan-registered banks. Operators will also face increased financial obligations, including substantial security deposits like KES 20 million for casinos and KES 200 million for online sports betting and lotteries.

Furthermore, the new framework introduces measures to protect consumers and address social concerns. These include a prohibition on bets below KES 20 and a ban on gambling advertisements on television and radio between 6 AM and 10 PM. Taxation on the industry is also being enhanced, with a 15% tax on gross gambling revenue and a 20% withholding tax on winnings.

Possible Changes and Restrictions to Online Gambling in the Future

Kenya is poised to implement significant new restrictions on platforms offering casino games like online slots and other gambling experiences, as the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) spearheads a multi-agency initiative to overhaul operational guidelines. This concerted effort, involving representatives from eight state bodies, aims to tighten controls across various aspects of the betting industry.

Upcoming regulations are expected to impose notable restrictions, including limitations on betting activities near educational institutions and new rules governing gambling hours. Additionally, the BCLB plans to introduce specific eligibility thresholds for individuals before they can participate in betting. These measures follow a recent 30-day suspension on gambling advertisements across all media platforms, which will remain in effect until the updated guidelines are fully implemented.

A key driver behind these changes is a growing concern over potential tax evasion by betting operators. Molo MP Kimani Kuria highlighted this issue, questioning, “While there is growth in excise duty on betting and gaming activities for the last two financial years, the withholding tax on wins continues to reduce. How is this possible?” This suggests a move towards ensuring greater financial transparency and compliance within the industry.

The gambling industry itself has expressed conditional support for the new measures. Sasa Krneta, chairperson of the Association of Gambling Operators of Kenya, stated, “We promote responsible gambling and all we want is to ensure that Kenyans only bet on that which they can afford to lose.”

He further affirmed the industry’s commitment, adding, “As operators, we are willing to do everything to ensure that there is compliance and that the livelihoods of communities are not destroyed by gambling.” These impending restrictions mark a pivotal step in reshaping Kenya’s online gambling landscape.
