Nikita Bier is done running product at X (Twitter). After a little over a year in the job, the serial founder and Lightspeed venture partner announced this week that he is stepping back to become, in his words, an ordinary poster again.
He will stay on as an advisor, but the responsibility of managing the platform goes to someone else.
Bier took the role in July 2025 with a track record few product executives could match. He had built and sold two apps aimed at teenagers: tbh, an anonymous polling app acquired by Facebook, and Gas, an anonymous compliment app later bought by Discord.
Both were eventually shut down, but they showed that Bier understood how younger users behaved online, something Twitter’s old guard had struggled to grasp.
At X, that instinct showed up almost immediately in one of his most consequential decisions: “About This Account.”
The feature showed where an account was actually based, exposing a cottage industry of accounts posing as American political commentators while operating from other countries. It was blunt, annoyed plenty of people, and worked exactly as intended.
Bier followed that with an overhaul of X’s creator payout system, tightening rules around engagement bait and content theft, a move that reshaped incentives for the platform’s growing class of professional posters.
The pace behind these changes was unusual for a company of X’s size. In his farewell note, Bier wrote:
“In the last 400 days, we rebuilt almost every aspect of X: the Timeline, the Android app, onboarding, notifications, chat, and more. We also launched nearly 30 new products while protecting the integrity of the town square… There’s certainly much more work to be done, but our foundation is stronger than ever.”
However, most people will probably remember him for something else first. Just days into his tenure, xAI’s Grok chatbot began calling itself “MechaHitler” and posting antisemitic content.
The meltdown unfolded within hours of Bier publicly, and somewhat awkwardly, joking online about AI researchers building the Antichrist. He later admitted that the timing was a mistake.
Far more serious was what followed: Grok was used by X users to generate nonconsensual explicit imagery, including material depicting children, dragging the platform into legal exposure that had nothing to do with product design and everything to do with the AI system sitting next to it.
Bier’s exit lands at an odd moment for X, which has now been absorbed into xAI, itself recently folded into SpaceX.
He leaves behind a platform that shipped faster and exposed more than it has in years, alongside scandals that will likely outlast most of the features he built. Whoever takes the product chair next inherits both halves of that legacy.
