Safaricom has launched Family Share, a plan that ties a Home Fibre subscription to mobile data and voice bundles the account holder can share with up to five family members.
Both new and existing Home Fibre customers can sign up, and everything arrives on one bill instead of a fibre invoice and a pile of separate airtime and bundle purchases.
What You Get
The account holder pays for a fibre plan, and the plan comes with a mobile allowance of minutes and data. Up to five family members can be added to draw from that allowance.
The company describes the result as a “converged” fixed-and-mobile product, which just means your home internet and your phone usage now sit under the same plan and the same bill.
Safaricom says the idea is to make household connectivity spending more predictable. If you have ever tried to work out who in the family burned through the data and why the airtime ran out on a Tuesday, you can see the appeal.
The Four Plans
There are four tiers, and the fibre speed is the main thing that changes between them.
The entry plan costs KES 3,749 and gives you 40 Mbps fibre (Bronze), 750 minutes and 14 GB of mobile data.
Next is Silver at KES 5,100, with 60 Mbps, 1,000 minutes and 21 GB.
Gold costs KES 7,799 and gives you 150 Mbps, 1,500 minutes and 33 GB.
At the top is Diamond at KES 13,999, with 500 Mbps, 1,500 minutes and 33 GB.
| Plan | Fibre speed | Mobile minutes | Mobile data | Price (KES) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 40 Mbps | 750 | 14 GB | 3,749 |
| Silver | 60 Mbps | 1,000 | 21 GB | 5,100 |
| Gold | 150 Mbps | 1,500 | 33 GB | 7,799 |
| Diamond | 500 Mbps | 1,500 | 33 GB | 13,999 |
The jump from Gold to Diamond is worth mentioning. The mobile allowance is identical, so the extra KES 6,200 buys only the speed increase from 150 Mbps to 500 Mbps.
Moving from Bronze to Silver costs KES 1,351 more and moving from Silver to Gold costs KES 2,699 more, and in both cases you get more speed, minutes and data in return.
Safaricom has pointed to its growth in its fibre business, stating that active Fibre to the Home (FTTH) customers have risen by 27%. The share of connected homes that actually hold an active subscription has climbed from 66.8% to 71.0%.
That second figure is important because plenty of homes have fibre running to them without anyone paying for a service, so the gap between “connected” and “subscribed” is where Safaricom still has room to grow.
A plan that bundles in mobile benefits gives households another reason to subscribe and stay.
The company also says Family Share follows earlier speed upgrades to Home Fibre that came at no extra charge, and it frames the plan as part of its Pata More initiative.
Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali said people work, learn and travel in different places and want more value without added complexity.
