Samsung is hold its Unpacked 5 event where it is expected to announced “the next Galaxy” later today. In the run up to this announcement, we’ve not heard or seen a lot about the device. However, if you follow closely then you have a rough idea of what the device will look like. There were some leaked sketches then we had popular device accessory maker Spigen showing off some Galaxy S5 branded cases which were in sync with what the sketches had revealed. Now thanks to the interwebs, we have some full high resolution renders of Samsung’s 2014 flagship.
From the above photos we can tell quite a lot about the Galaxy S5. We have information from credible quarters that Samsung will be sticking with its Magazine UI (the one we saw on those Galaxy Tab PRO tablets) for the Galaxy S5 to replace its aged colourful Touchwiz which save for the refresh it got with Nature UX, has basically remained the same.
The back of the device on the leaked images reveals a flash (not sure if we’ll see Xenon flash here or it’ll just be our usual LED) and what is supposed to be a heart rate monitor sensor.
There are a few areas in the leaked photos that have attracted my interest: the model number is GT-00000. This means that these are images from a prototype and not a market-ready device like the ones that will be on stage later today. Also, those bezels are huge! Even the Galaxy S4 didn’t have those. If this turns out to be the Galaxy S5 then I’ll be disappointed because the rumour mill had this fairy tale of a bezel-less device. I hoped for an almost bezel-less device (LG G2 style) or better. We’ll see.
Note also that the menu button on current Galaxy devices has been replaced with a recent apps button just like on other Android devices with on-screen buttons. This is what Samsung unveiled on the Galaxy Tab PRO tablets so its easy to see where that is coming from.
What we’re not sure of is whether this is the Galaxy S5 or one of the Galaxy S5s since there have been reports that Samsung will launch two Galaxy S5s one very premium and another, the yearly Galaxy S update. We had previously heard that the very premium variant would belong not to the Galaxy S family but to the Galaxy F series. Something tells me that these images are of a “lesser” variant of the Galaxy S5 or some other device Samsung will be showcasing. I hope I am right.
