Huawei is keen on becoming the go-to brand when it comes to consumer technologies. To that end, it has sought the services of a face that is synonymous with footballing success, Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Messi will become the company’s brand ambassador. The company hopes Messi can help raise its brand awareness in markets it has been making inroads in like Latin America, Asia and Europe where football enjoys a cult-like following.
Huawei managed to ship over 100 million smartphones in 2015 and rose to become one of the three top smartphone vendors in the world. It beat Xiaomi, Lenovo, Apple and Samsung to become the top smartphone vendor in its home market, China. In 2016, the company is keen on not just maintaining the gains made the previous year but also improving on them.
Messi has previously graced Samsung’s Galaxy 11 campaign. Messi’s football club, Barcelona, signed up another Chinese device maker, Oppo, as its official smartphone partner. Huawei is the official smartphone partner of London-based English football club Arsenal.
