Tecno Mobile, a subsidiary of Transsion Holdings that has been in Kenya for the past ten years, has partnered with ActionAid, an anti-poverty NGO (Non-Govermental Organization) in Kenya, to counter the effects of the recent drought that hit Kenya by running the school feeding program.
The drought that lasted a couple of months affected at least 23 counties in the country with Baringo county, Turkana, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Kwale, Kilifi, Makueni, Samburu, West Pokot, Kwale, Tharaka Nithi, and Marsabit counties being among the most affected.
ActionAid Kenya has been working in Kenya since 1972 and the NGO is currently offering humanitarian assistance to over one million underprivileged Kenyans across 14 counties.
The School Feeding Program was carried out in Kajiado county and Isiolo County in two phases. The first phase was undertaken in Isiolo county where the two organizations visited schools and donated items to them. The second phase was undertaken in Kajiado county.
The donation was made to five schools in Kajiado County and it included; food stuffs, water tanks, sanitary towels for the girls, and sports attires. The county, aside from being among the worst hit by the drought, also suffers from societal challenges such as Female Genital Mutilation.
The donations totalled to two million kenyan shillings. Tecno has reiterated its commitment to the program through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department.
