Xiaomi was one of the first companies to shred the bezels off their smartphones when they announced the Mi Mix last year. Well, the company has decided to take it a notch higher and get even thinner with the new Mi Mix 2.
In terms of aesthetics, the Mi Mix 2 looks a lot similar to its predecessor, with a 5.99-inch display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The body of the device is made of a ceramic back that is covered on all its four sides with an aluminium allow frame and a 18K gold plated ring around the camera as an accent.
The Mi Mix 2 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, having lost weight from 209 grams to 185 grams and shrunk is bottom chin (the only bezel it has) by 12%. The speaker has been squeezed to the top of the display and the proximity sensor is hidden underneath the display, however, the selfie camera remains at the bottom, just like we saw it on the Mi Mix.
The Mi Mix 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 platform with 6GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage, depending on which version of the device you get, a 3400mAh battery, a fingerprint reader, no headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C and a 12MP camera on the back with 4-axis OIS complemented by a 5MP selfie shooter. The phone boasts of supporting 43 international 4G LTE bands and yes, we checked, it will work perfectly in Kenya.
Software-wise, the device runs Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 on top. There’s also a special edition of the Mi Mix 2 that includes 8GB of RAM, extends the 18K gold plated ring to the fingerprint reader as well and has an all ceramic body.
The Mi Mix 2 will send your bank account back around Ksh.52,000 for the entry model that should be all you really need but if you want the creme de la creme, prepare your pocket with not less than Ksh.74,000
Xiaomi also announced the successor to the Mi Note 2, that bore a striking resemblance to Samsung’s Note 7, the Mi Note 3. The Mi Note 3 looks a lot like the Xiaomi Mi 6, but bigger with a 5.5-inch display. Other features include Snapdragon 660 SoC, 6GB RAM, 3500mAh battery, 12MP dual cameras combination at the back, 16MP selfie shooter, stereo speakers and will start at around Ksh.40,000
