Eliud MPESASafaricom started teasing a new M-PESA logo a couple of days ago. the day is finally here, and Kenya’s largest telco, and arguably one of Africa’s most influential mobile operators, has rebranded the mobile money product, which has amassed millions of users in Kenya, as well as being integrated with tens of financial products.

The rebrand comes at a time when the nation is awaiting its son Eliud Kipchoge to become the first athlete to finish a full marathon under 2 hours successfully. His success, should it occur, will be the world’s first. Safaricom is taking this opportunity to support the athlete, and in the next week, the M-PESA logo will be christened with an ELIUD 1:59 moniker.

In the same breath, Kenyans will have the chance to watch the marathon from 8 AM to 4 PM. The promotion is, of course, available for Safaricom users. The race, which can be streamed live from YouTube, targets to net more comprehensive support from Kenyans, who can share words of encouragement via a dedicated text line 159.

The bundle can also be accessed by dialing *159# on your handheld.

“We are honoured to renew our commitment with Eliud Kipchoge and to support him as he races against time. As part of our support, we will be empowering any Kenyan across the country to stream the challenge for free, wherever they are, with the advantage of our strong network and wide coverage. For every Kenyan, Kipchoge is a reflection of our resilience and determination as he has taken on challenge after challenge,” said Michael Joseph, CEO, Safaricom.

“The last few years have seen Kipchoge emerge not only as one of the greatest athletes ever but also as one of the most accomplished people ever. It is a privilege to partner with him on this historic occasion and as an icon, it is only befitting to offer our M-PESA brand in his recognition,” added Michael.
