Smartphone companies have long partnered with leading lens makers to market their devices as the best in photography, and TECNO is choosing that path too.
The tech company is planning to collab with renowned lens makers like Zeiss, Leica and Hasselblad for its future smartphones. They recently collaborated with John Rankin Waddell, a well-known celebrity portrait photographer who shared his insights with TECNO when making the Phantom X2 Pro, which features a unique retractable portrait lens.
TECNO Launches Smartphone Worth 100K
TECNO Phantom X2 Pro has a triple-camera system in the centre, including a 64MP main. The Pro version has a retractable 50MP portrait lens(65mm f/1.5 aperture) with a ring around it. It also functions as a telephoto lens with 2.5x zoom.
The Pro opts for a 50MP main with an additional 13MP ultra-wide lens that also functions as a macro lens.
Like the Camon 19 Pro, the Phantom X2 sports an RGBW lens to capture up to 60% more light plus a glass lens to increase light going into it by 30%.
The vanilla X2 has a 2MP depth sensor.
Both have OIS support.
TECNO is taking the smartphone camera innovation further as they are planning to work with the likes of Leica, Zeiss or Hasselblad for their future smartphones, especially the flagship Phantom series. TECNO said that they are in the talking stages with some of them and it’ll be interesting to see who they pick for the Phantom X3 that launches later next year.
OPPO and OnePlus have an ongoing partnership with Hasselblad, Xiaomi has the same relationship with Leica while Vivo co-engineers its lenses with Zeiss.
These partnerships work well for both parties as it increases each other’s brand legacy and market share. People who buy these devices get the impression that their mobile photography will be just as good as the actual cameras even if it’s not the physical components but the colour science tech.
TECNO is hoping these collaborations will give them an edge in photography as they enter the premium flagship market.
The recently launched Phantom X2 series starts selling for 100K and ships with a Dimensity 9000 5G(4nm) chipset paired with 8GB RAM and 12GB for the regular and Pro version respectively. There’s a MemFusion feature that adds up to 5GB of virtual RAM. Mali G710 MC10 GPU is present for both.
The Phantom X2 series has a slightly curved 6.8″ Super AMOLED display(1080 x 2400 pixels) rocking a 120Hz refresh rate in a 20:9 aspect ratio. Gorilla Glass Victus is present for protection. The display features P3 wide colour gamut.
TECNO ditched the dual left selfie cutout for its front cameras for the centre punch-hole cutout. The Phantom X2 has a 32MP selfie camera.
Video recording by the main cameras is capped at 4K 60fps for both too while selfie videos are limited to 1080p 60fps.
Phantom X2 runs on Android 12 and HiOS 12 and will upgrade to Android 13 and Android 14.
