Showmax Pro the live sports streaming service is shutting down. From the 1st of October, 2023 the streaming service will no longer be available for new subscriptions. For the users with an auto-renewal subscription, this will be halted as of October 20, 2023.
Subscribers of the service will be moved on to DSTV Stream.
Showmax Pro bundled live channels with music channels, news, and live sports streaming from SuperSport. The service was rolled out in Kenya in July, 2020 charging Kenyans KES 2,100. Sadly, the journey has now come to an end.
What is to come next? Expect major changes to Showmax with a promised revamp to the service.
“With the relaunch of Showmax later this year, our sport offering will focus exclusively on the Premier League, the most popular league on the continent. More details around pricing and the product will be shared soon” said Showmax to its subscribers.
Showmax New Partnership
Traditionally, Showmax’s edge in the market has been its partnerships. This has enabled subscribers to have access to third-party films, especially those from HBO and Universal Pictures like Oppenheimer, White House Plumbers, and The Sopranos.
The revamp promises new partnerships with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky. Further, this will see the birth of a new group known as Earth UK, which will trade as the Showmax Group. MultiChoice will be the majority shareholder with NBCUniversal owning the rest.
Additionally, it will mean Showmax Group will be powered by NBCUniversal’s own streaming service, Peacock. The new era working with the two media powerhouses means Shomax subscribers in the region may be in line for more high quality content.
