Safaricom’s mobile money platform, M-Pesa is currently down for many users experiencing delays for the past 30 minutes. More users are now flocking to social media platforms to raise their concerns and frustrations. The ubiquitous mobile money platform is relied upon by millions of subscribers in the country.
Since its launch in 2007, M-PESA has gained massive traction and heavy reliance by individuals and businesses alike. It has since been successful in the country taking a massive 97% share in the mobile money market.
The outage appears to be affecting M-PESA services on both the STK and the App. This outage will most likely cause disruptions affecting thousands of users who require the services to make their digital payments.
Currently, users trying to make transactions using M-PESA are receiving different error messages with Safaricom requesting users to wait for 10 minutes before trying another transaction.
Safaricom has since confirmed the outage and has said the issue is “being addressed with utmost priority”. “We are currently having challenges with MPesa services and resolution is underway,” Safaricom’s customer care has responded to one user on X.
All services are back online
Safaricom has at last resolved the technical hitch that resulted in the M-PESA outage lasting almost three hours. Kenyans can now resume making transactions using the App or via the Sim Toolkit.
“All M-PESA services are now available,” Safaricom has shared on X
Some customers had previously noted that they could access some M-Pesa services for the past hour. Sending money or buying airtime also worked for me at that time.
Update: Safaricom has resolved the technical issue affecting causing the outage. All M-PESA services are now available.
