List of Licensed Digital Lenders in Kenya May 2024

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) recently licensed an additional 19 Digital Credit Providers (DCPs), bringing the total of licensed operators to in Kenya 51. More notably, the list includes Tala, Pezesha, M-Kopa, and Lipa Later.

Following the enforcement of the CBK Amendment Bill, 2021, digital lenders in the country are policied by the CBK and have to adhere to various regulations. These regulations include licensing and are in place in part to enhance consumer protection, provide for credit information sharing, and enforce anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism measures.

The regulatory body reports that it has received 480 applications since March 2022. It has been working with the applicants and other regulatory agencies including the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in the review process.

“Other applicants are at different stages in the process, largely awaiting the submission of requisite documentation,” CBK shares in a notice.
