Kenya revenue authority has initiated a taxpayer Register Data Clean-Up Exercise, requiring all taxpayers to authenticate their mobile phone numbers linked to their iTax accounts.
According to the Public Notice on the “Taxpayer Register Data Clean-Up Exercise” dated June 24, 2024, all registered taxpayers are required to verify the mobile phone number associated with their iTax accounts. The move aims to enhance data accuracy, secure taxpayer information, and ensure effective communication between KRA and taxpayers.
Why KRA is Requiring Mobile Number Authentication
The main purpose of the mobile number verification process is to:
- Ensure Data Accuracy: By confirming the contact numbers, KRA will be able to maintain a reliable taxpayer database.
- Enhance Security: The verification process ensures that each taxpayer’s account is securely linked to an active, accurate mobile number, reducing the risk of fraud and unauthorized access.
- Improve Communication: KRA uses mobile numbers for important alerts, such as tax filing deadlines, updates, and changes in tax regulations.
Step-by-Step Guide to Authenticating Your Mobile Number in iTax
1. Log in to iTax
- Go to the KRA iTax portal.
- Enter your PIN number and password to log in.
2. Verify Current Mobile Number
- Once logged in, iTax will display the current mobile number linked to your PIN.
- Review the displayed number to determine if it’s accurate and up-to-date.
3. Send Verification Code
- If the Number is Accurate: Click on “Send Verification Code,” and a code will be sent to the displayed mobile phone number.
- If the Number is Incorrect: Update the number in the pop-up window by entering the preferred mobile number. Then click “Send Verification Code” to receive a code on the new number.
4. Enter the Verification Code
- Check your phone for the verification code sent via SMS.
- Enter the verification code in iTax to complete the authentication process.
Taxpayers should authenticate promptly to avoid disruptions in KRA communications, including potential issues with account access. It is also recommended to use your personal mobile number or a primary contact you have consistent access to, as KRA will send important notifications to this number.
