YouTube is facing heavy criticism after it was revealed the platform has been secretly applying AI-powered enhancements to some creator videos, especially Shorts, without their knowledge or approval.
The edits, which include unblurring, denoising, and sharpening, have alarmed creators who argue that even small undisclosed changes can distort reality and undermine trust.
Popular YouTubers Rick Beato and Rhett Shull noticed their videos looked noticeably different after being uploaded.
Beato pointed out that his hair and skin appeared artificially altered, while Shull said the results made his content look “AI-generated,” misrepresenting his work to viewers.
On Reddit, several smaller creators echoed similar concerns, reporting that their YouTube Shorts had been automatically “AI-upscaled” without permission.
YouTube’s Explanation
The company confirmed it is running a video enhancement experiment, describing it as a “machine learning” initiative aimed at improving video quality.
However, critics argue the lack of disclosure and control strips creators of ownership over how their content appears online. For many, the issue isn’t the technology itself; it’s that the edits were carried out in secret.
The controversy touches on deeper concerns about the future of digital media, such as:
- Consent and Transparency: Creators were not told their content would be altered, raising questions about platform ethics.
- Authenticity at Risk: Subtle changes, like smoother skin or sharper details, may seem harmless, but they blur the line between reality and AI manipulation.
- Erosion of Trust: Audiences may believe creators are intentionally editing their appearance, damaging credibility.
This development adds to a larger debate over how much control tech platforms should exercise over user-generated content.
YouTube built its reputation on empowering individuals to “broadcast yourself.” But as AI becomes more deeply integrated into its ecosystem, the balance between innovation and creator autonomy is being tested.
Unless YouTube provides more transparency and options, critics warn these secret enhancements could erode the authenticity that made the platform thrive.
