No Extension This Year, KRA Warns on Late Tax Filing

KRA wants every taxpayer who has not filed their 2025 income tax return to stop procrastinating. The deadline is midnight on Tuesday, 30th June 2026, and KRA has made it clear there is no extension coming this year.

This matters because of what usually happens every June. Thousands of Kenyans wait until the final two or three days to file, the iTax portal gets flooded with traffic, and the system starts lagging or crashing entirely.

People end up stuck refreshing a page at 11pm, panicking, and some miss the deadline simply because the platform cannot handle the load. KRA is trying to head that off this year by pushing people to file early rather than scrambling at the last minute.

The Authority has also widened the ways people can actually file. Beyond the usual iTax portal at itax.kra.go.ke, taxpayers can now get help filing through WhatsApp on 0711 099 999, through eCitizen, or even via USSD by dialing *2225# on a basic phone for anyone without reliable internet access or a smartphone.

KRA has also stretched out its support hours. The Contact Centre, social media team, Huduma Centres, KRA Service Centres, and the Ushuru Mashinani Service Partners spread across the country are all operating longer hours this week specifically to clear the backlog before Tuesday.

If you still need help, you can call the Contact Centre on 020 4 999 999 or 0711 099 999, email [email protected], reach out on social media via @KRACare or @KRACorporate, or just walk into the nearest KRA office.

The penalty for missing the deadline has not changed. Anyone who fails to file on time faces the standard penalties and could also be hit with a default assessment, which is essentially KRA estimating your tax bill for you, usually not in your favour.

The simplest way to avoid all of this is to just file now. The platforms are working, with a lag at times, it has to be said.

The lines will be long on Monday and Tuesday, and there is no last-minute reprieve waiting for anyone this year.
