TECNO Camon 17 Pro Review: Midrange Standout
TECNO Camon 17 Pro Camera Review: Big Step Forward
Here’s our quick hands-on review of the TECNO Camon 17 Pro.
Design
TECNO Camon 17 Pro is a sleek looking midranger. It’s slim with chamfered edges for easy grip and one-handed use.
At the front, we have a 6.8″ FHD Dot-in display with a resolution of 1080 by 2460(395 ppi), an 82% aspect ratio and 500 nits in terms of brightness.
And then TECNO tossed in a 90Hz refresh rate to sweeten the deal. This high refresh rate display allows for a smooth velvety experience when opening apps, browsing the web, scrolling social media, switching apps, and most importantly, gaming.
The display is bright enough outdoors and indoors. To serve all your multimedia needs, TECNO Camon 17 Pro features dual stereo so you can enjoy listening to music, gaming and watching movies.
The back boasts a glossy finish with a camera bump at the top left and the Camon logo at the bottom.
To prevent fingerprint smudges, TECNO incorporated optical coating and well crafted nanoscale textures.
TECNO Camon 17 Pro comes in attention-grabbing colours including California Dream Silver and Malibu Blue.
Overall design choices featured on the TECNO Camon 17 Pro give it a premium aesthetic vibe.
Software and Performance
TECNO Camon 17 Pro ships with Android 11 and HiOS 7.6 straight from the box.
Android 11 is Google’s latest mobile operating system that brings new privacy and security features including improved handling of app permissions for the camera, microphone, and location, scoped storage, and auto-reset permissions for apps you haven’t used in a while, Nearby Share, ability to pin apps in the share menu and scheduled dark mode, powerful media controls, seamless updates, Multitasking pane, improved autofill, suggested apps, biometric authentication, among a host of other useful features.
HiOS 7.6 comes with a new modern layout with a minimalist visual experience and new features like Peek Proof, App Twin, Video Assistant, Improved Smart scanner with document correction, Phone cloner, among others.
Under the hood of the TECNO Camon 17 Pro is Helio G95 processor, Mali G76 GPU and 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage – and if that’s not enough, you can toss in an external microSD card in the dual sim slot.
That’s a lot in there. TECNO really went all-in with the TECNO Camon 17 Pro.
Perfromance has been zippy and I’ve had zero issues so far and I usually push smartphones to their edges with mixed light and heavy workloads and the TECNO Camon 17 Pro has held its own.
Our full assessment will be in our in-depth review coming soon.
Cameras
You get a 64MP quad-camera setup at the back which also includes a 2MP bokeh camera, 8MP wide-angle camera and a 2MP monochrome sensor.
The camera bump also features a quad-LED flash.
At the front, in the centred punch-hole is the 48MP selfie camera. In the top bezel, we have dual-LED flash.
TECNO embedded its AI technology to enhance its photography for both its front-facing and main cameras.
TECNO included new features to play around with including Super Night Mode that comes in handy when shooting in lowlit scenarios.
Videography has also improved on the TECNO Camon 17 Pro. There are now customizable video templates(travel, sport, street, family and more) to choose from together with a variety of transitions, camera movements and music choices in the Film mode.
You can now shoot 4K content at 30fps, 1080p at either 60fps or 30fps and 720p at 30fps.
There’s also video bokeh mode, video beauty mode, ultra-steady mode(capped at 1080p at 30fps), slowmotion(capped at 960fps) and Time-lapse at 1080p at 30fps.
If you are a creative/shutterbug or like posting videos on social media, then you’ll love shooting with the TECNO Camon 17 Pro.
We’ll be testing these features in the coming days and I hope you’re excited just as I am.
Battery Life
TECNO Camon 17 Pro comes with a 5000mAh battery that juices up with 25W fast Type-C charging.
That’s a whole lot of battery capacity coupled with quick fast charging. The battery looks like it would pull two days on light use.
We’ll put the TECNO Camon 17 Pro’s battery through its paces during our review to give a conclusive verdict.
