Following the resignation of Ezra Chiloba, the search for a new Director General (DG) has commenced. Currently, Chris Wambua holds the position in an acting capacity, but the ICT regulator is looking for a permanent solution. To recap Chiloba was suspended by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) board due to fraud allegations. He later resigned, officially making the position vacant.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is the authoritative regulatory body for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry in Kenya. Responsible for overseeing telecommunications, cyber security, broadcasting, multimedia, postal/courier services, and more. Hence, the CA plays a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s digital future.
The role of the Director General at the Communications Authority of Kenya is a linchpin in the nation’s ICT sector. The individual selected for this role will be entrusted with a wide array of core responsibilities, with the potential to shape the direction of Kenya’s digital future.
As a regulator, the CA receives about Sh3 billion every financial year in fees from institutions in the communications space. The Authority is also overseeing the Universal Service Fund which is crucial in bridging the digital divide in Kenya. Other than handling large amounts of money, the CA is also spearheading crucial ICT projects.
Major telcos in the country are currently rolling out 5G. Kenya is also set to launch its first locally manufactured smartphone. The CA is also spearheading the rollout of the Nation Addressing System and is set to begin a pilot phase for Digital Audio Broadcasting in Kenya. No doubt, the new DG will have a full in-tray once appointed.
