UPDATE: Safaricom postponed the system maintenance indefinitely.
Safaricom has announced a scheduled system maintenance over the weekend that will affect their mobile money service M-PESA. The company says that payment options Lipa na M-PESA and Paybill service will be available intermittently during the maintenance period.
Other services to be affected include Western Union and M-PESA Global, a service that also allows you to move money to and from Paypal. Both Safaricom Apps, M-PESA App and mySafaricom App will be affected. Absence of the two apps means that M-PESA will only be available consistently via SIM toolkit or USSD.
Other services like voice, SMS and calls will be available.
The duration of scheduled system maintenance is Sunday night, 14th July from 11pm to Monday, at 4am. This means that if you happen to be on a night out, you may need to make contingency plans to avoid peeling potatoes.
Safaricom hopes that the timing of system maintenance is such that there will be least inconvenience to subscribers, although 11pm is quite early in the night. A 4 hour system update signals a massive software upgrade.
