Messaging platform WhatsApp seems to be working on a new feature that automatically transcribes voice notes. This was noted recently by WABetaInfo reporting that WhatsApp is currently testing a feature designed to help users avoid the hassle of going through audio messages.
The Meta-owned company has rolled out the transcription feature to a small group of users in specific countries that are part of the app’s beta program. According to WABetaInfo, it is appearing for those on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.15.5, which is currently available for download from the Google Play Store.
The report goes further to suggest that users will have to download an additional package and that the transcriptions take place on the device itself. This means that no one except you will be able to read the transcribed message. As per the images, it also seems that the feature will be enabled for both incoming and outgoing voice messages.
The feature is also currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hindi. The main question comes as to if or when we will see more languages made available in the future.
The feature could prove to be useful if you receive a voice note while in a noisy environment and don’t have headphones nearby or if you just don’t want to play the voice note in front of others.
This report comes among several other feature rollouts we have seen from WhatsApp in the last few weeks such as Meta AI, event organising tools and more.
