WhatsApp introduced usernames so people could chat without revealing their phone numbers, but the feature is forcing a choice between keeping personal details private and staying reachable outside the app.
Some users are asking whether hiding their number is worth the hassle, especially when they deal with businesses, customers, or anyone they might need to reach by other means.
There is no clear evidence that large numbers of people are deleting their usernames. Still, the debate highlights a choice WhatsApp users now have to make between privacy and convenience.
Why Some Users Prefer Phone Numbers
Until now, your phone number was how people found and contacted you on WhatsApp. This meant that when you chatted with someone new or joined a group, other members could see your number, raising privacy concerns when interacting with strangers or businesses.
Usernames let people share a unique handle instead, so someone who has not saved your number sees the username and nothing more.

The downside is that a username mainly works within WhatsApp. Someone who only knows your handle cannot simply use it to call or text you through their phone’s normal calling and messaging services.
This can become inconvenient if you lose access to your WhatsApp account, stop using the app, or need to reach someone urgently outside it.
Deleting a username brings the number back into view for anyone who has not saved it, so people have to decide whether they would rather stay hidden or be easy to find.
Businesses Are Feeling It Too
The change presents a challenge for businesses that use WhatsApp to find customers, answer questions, and process orders.
Imagine ordering something from a shop through WhatsApp. You have asked questions, agreed on the price, and placed your order, but the business has never received your phone number.

The shop can still message you on WhatsApp, but it cannot use your username to call you directly or send you a regular text message about your delivery.
It may also be harder for businesses to match your conversation with their existing customer records, especially if they previously relied on phone numbers to identify customers.
Meta has introduced Business-scoped User ID (BSUID), which helps businesses recognize customers on WhatsApp even when their phone numbers are not available. However, businesses feel this also does not give them a number they can use to contact customers outside the app.
A business can ask customers to share their numbers when necessary, but clients can choose whether to do so.
Is Keeping Your Username Worth It?
For people who regularly interact with strangers, usernames offer a useful layer of privacy. You can chat with someone without immediately giving them a phone number they could use to contact you elsewhere.
However, phone numbers remain useful for people who want to stay reachable through ordinary calls and text messages, regardless of whether they are using WhatsApp.
Ultimately, neither option is perfect. Keeping your username means having more control over who sees your number, while removing it makes your contact details available to people who might otherwise only know you through WhatsApp.
