Marvel is in early discussions with Anthony and Joe Russo to direct the next two Avengers movies, as per a report from The Hollywood Reporter. This potential reunion comes as a surprise, given the directors’ previous reluctance to direct more ensemble superhero films.
The Russo brothers are no strangers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), having directed four successful films, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their potential return could be seen as a shrewd move by Marvel to capitalize on the directors’ proven track record with large-scale superhero stories.
This development follows a period of uncertainty for the Avengers franchise. The fifth installment, previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, has undergone multiple changes, including the departure of its initial director, Daniel Destin Cretton. In fact, the title itself may be altered due to Jonathan Majors’ legal issues, who was set to play the villain Kang.
While the Russos’ involvement could excite fans and potentially ensure a certain level of quality, it’s not without its problems. The MCU has evolved since Endgame (for worse), and the directors’ recent non-Marvel projects have received mixed reviews. Moreover, the success of their previous MCU films was partly attributed to screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, whose involvement in these new projects remains unclear.
The rumored return of the Russo brothers raises interesting questions about the future direction of the Avengers franchise. Will they be able to recapture the magic of their earlier MCU films? How will they adapt to the current phase of the Marvel universe (honestly, audiences are so confused by the current Multiverse plot)? These questions may find answers soon, with potential announcements expected at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con. Whether we’ll like these answers is an entirely different story.
Before then, MCU fans can look forward to Deadpool & Wolverine, which is set to hit theaters on July 26.
