Samsung Galaxy A36 vs A56

Samsung’s Galaxy A series continues to target the sweet spot between flagship features and wallet-friendly pricing. The Galaxy A36 and A56 represent two different approaches to this balance, with the A36 positioned as the more affordable Samsung option when compared to the A56.

So, what are the key differences between the A36 and A56 besides the price tag, and why should you choose one over the other?

Design Language

The Samsung Galaxy A56 takes the design crown with its metal frame construction and refined “Grouped Linear Floating Camera” island. At 7.4mm thick, it feels more premium in hand and showcases Samsung’s commitment to elevating the A-series aesthetic.

The camera module floats elegantly above the back panel with chrome accents that catch light beautifully.

As for the Galaxy A36, it sticks with an all-plastic build, though it matches the A56 in thickness (7.4mm) and weighs in at a lighter 195g.

Although it lacks the premium feel of its sibling, it’s actually 14g lighter and features the same IP67 water resistance rating. Both phones sport Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection front and back.

Display Quality

Here’s where things get interesting. Both phones feature nearly identical 6.7-inch Super AMOLED displays with 120Hz refresh rates. The A36 delivers 1200 nits peak brightness (up from the A35’s 1000 nits), while the A56 pushes this to an impressive 1900 nits for HDR content.

Both displays offer Samsung’s signature vibrant colors and deep blacks, making them excellent for media consumption and outdoor use. The A56’s higher brightness gives it a slight edge for extreme sunlight conditions.

Performance Differences

It should go without saying that this is where the phones truly differentiate themselves. The Galaxy A56 runs Samsung’s new Exynos 1580 chipset, which provides smooth daily performance for messaging, photography, and streaming.

While it may struggle with intensive gaming like PUBG or Call of Duty Mobile on high settings, it handles casual games effortlessly.

The Galaxy A36 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor with 8GB of RAM. However, benchmark tests show minimal improvement over its predecessor, and real-world usage reveals noticeable micro-stutters when waking the phone or accessing voice commands.

Both phones come with 256GB storage, but the A36 removes microSD support, a step backward from previous generations.

Cameras and Photography

The Galaxy A36 carries forward the exact same triple camera system from the A35: a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide, and a 5MP macro camera.

Its front camera actually downgrades from 13MP to 12MP. Despite the unchanged hardware, it still produces excellent midrange photos with Samsung’s vibrant processing and strong dynamic range.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy A56 features a similar 50MP main camera setup but with enhanced AI processing, including Best Face for group photo corrections and Object Eraser for removing unwanted elements.

The 12MP front camera and ultrawide maintain excellent consistency with the main sensor. Portrait mode shows particularly impressive edge detection and natural bokeh effects.

Both phones max out at 4K/30fps video recording, though the A56’s superior processing gives it a slight advantage in overall image quality.

Battery and Charging

Both phones pack identical 5000mAh batteries with 45W fast charging support. The A36 actually performs slightly worse in battery tests (11 hours 27 minutes vs. the A35’s longer runtime), likely due to the brighter display and new processor.

However, real-world usage easily stretches through full days with 50-60% remaining.

The A56 benefits from better optimization, making its 5000mAh feel larger in practice. Both phones charge from empty to 63% in about 30 minutes, with full charges taking around 75 minutes. Neither includes wireless charging.

Software Support

Both devices launch with Android 15 and One UI 7, Samsung’s refined interface that balances customization with simplicity. The A56 gets more comprehensive AI features, while the A36 receives a lighter “Awesome Intelligence” suite without advanced tools like the Now Bar.

Samsung’s standout feature across both phones is the incredible six-year software support commitment, which is exceptional for mid-range devices where most manufacturers offer just 2-3 years.

Choose the Galaxy A36 5G if:

  • Budget is your priority – Save KES 8,000 compared to the A56
  • Weight matters – At 195g, it’s noticeably lighter for comfortable one-handed use
  • You want Samsung reliability without breaking the bank – Still gets 6 years of software support
  • Basic photography is enough – The 50MP camera system delivers solid results for social media
  • You’re upgrading from a much older phone – Performance will still feel like a significant improvement
  • Plastic build doesn’t bother you – Some prefer the less slippery feel and better drop resistance

Choose the Galaxy A56 5G if:

  • You want a premium feel – Metal frame construction feels significantly more solid and upscale
  • Performance matters – Smoother daily operation with fewer micro-stutters and better optimization
  • You use your phone outdoors frequently – 1900 nits peak brightness crushes the A36’s 1200 nits
  • Photography is important – Enhanced AI features like Best Face and Object Eraser actually improve your shots
  • You want the best mid-range Samsung experience – More refined overall package with better long-term value
  • Gaming performance counts – While not a gaming phone, it handles demanding apps better than the A36
  • You plan to keep the phone for years – The extra KES 8,000 pays off in daily satisfaction over time

As you can see, the Galaxy A56 offers better value, superior build quality, and more polished performance, but at a KES 8,000 premium over the A36.

If budget is tight, the A36 still delivers solid Samsung reliability, but the A56 is worth the extra cost for most buyers seeking the best mid-range Samsung experience.
