Forest: The App That Kills a Tree Every Time You Check Your Phone

Productivity apps live on the same devices that constantly compete for your attention. Most try to solve the problem with timers and to-do lists, relying on you to stay disciplined even when distractions are only a tap away. Forest takes a different approach.

Instead of telling you to stay focused, it gives you a tree to protect.

The idea is simple. You plant a virtual seedling, set a timer, and put your phone down. If you use your phone before the timer ends, the tree dies. If you stay focused, it grows.

Keep doing this and your seedling becomes a tree. Over time, those trees grow into a forest that shows every focused work session you completed. It is a simple idea that uses a small emotional incentive to make staying focused more rewarding than a standard timer.

Forest App

The Pomodoro Technique

Forest is based on the Pomodoro technique, a time management method that divides work into focused sessions, usually 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break. This cycle is repeated until the task or study session is complete.

.
The Pomodoro Technique

Forest doesn’t force users into a specific routine. Instead, it lets them set a focus timer anywhere from a few minutes to 120 minutes, making it easy to start with short sessions and increase the duration over time as concentrating becomes easier.

A good approach is to begin with 15 to 20 minutes, complete those sessions consistently, and gradually extend them as the habit develops.

Longer focus sessions unlock new trees, giving users a visible sign of their progress. This is where the app’s gamification works well.

As total focus time increases, new tree species become available. Users can also choose a specific tree to grow during each session, giving even a 25-minute focus block a clear goal.

Additional tree species and seasonal themes can be unlocked using in-app currency earned through completed focus sessions, while optional microtransactions are available for those who want to unlock them more quickly.

Focus Timer

None of it feels forced, and the earned currency system means regular users can still unlock new content without having to spend money.

A Forest That Tracks More Than Trees

The app tracks your focus across days, weeks, months, and years, turning your growing forest into a timeline of your productivity instead of just a visual feature.

Users can tag each session based on:

  • Activity
  • Study
  • Work
  • Reading
  • A Specific Project

These tags make it easy to see where your focused time was spent, not just how much time you stayed focused.

Daily challenges and streaks borrow ideas from language learning apps, rewarding consistency with achievements and leaderboards. One achievement, for example, is unlocked after accumulating three days of total focus time.

Deep Focus mode is designed for people who need fewer distractions. It blocks every app except those on your allow list, so opening a blocked app immediately ends the session. It’s aimed at anyone who picks up their phone for a quick check and ends up losing twenty minutes.

Instead of relying on willpower, Deep Focus removes the temptation by blocking everything except the apps you’ve chosen to keep available.

Deep Focus Mode

The Social Layer and the Real Trees

Forest has a friends feature that lets users view each other’s forests and join shared focus sessions. This makes staying productive feel more like a group effort than a solo task.

The social aspect is intentionally subtle. There is no public feed or pressure to show off, just a simple way to see when others are spending time focused.

Deep Focus Global Ranking

One feature that stands out is the real-world tree planting option. Users who earn 2,500 virtual coins through focus sessions can put those coins toward planting a real tree through Forest’s partnership with Trees for the Future.

Every five contributions fund the planting of one real tree. It is a small reward, but it gives users a tangible way to connect their focus sessions to something beyond the app.

What Forest Plus Costs

Forest is free to download, and the Focus Timer is available at no cost. Forest Plus includes a seven-day free trial, after which it costs $3.33 per month when billed annually at $39.99. Users can cancel their subscription at any time.

Forest Plus adds a custom app allow list, focus insights, personalized focus settings, seasonal Crystal Trees, three times more focus coin earnings, access to the real-tree planting feature, and an ad-free experience.

The free version includes the app’s main focus features, while Forest Plus offers additional tools for people who use the app regularly. According to Forest, more than 8 million users have upgraded to the paid version.

Forest App Plus

On Play Store, the app has been downloaded more than 10 million times and has over 810,000 reviews. On App Store, it has a rating of 4.8 from more than 602,000 users. Those are strong numbers for an app built around helping people spend less time on their phones.

Who Needs This App

Forest is best suited for students, remote workers, and anyone who feels they spend too much time on their phone. The idea of growing a virtual tree may seem simple, but it becomes surprisingly effective the first time you check your phone during a focus session and watch your tree wither.

That feeling of guilt is central to how the app works. Instead of relying only on timers or reminders, Forest adds a small consequence for losing focus.

If you’ve tried timers, white noise apps, or simply telling yourself to stay on task, Forest offers something different. It makes breaking your focus feel tangible by showing the tree you planted die when you can’t resist picking up your phone.
