TikTok has begun rolling out a native calling feature, letting users place one-on-one voice and video calls directly through the app’s direct messages, without needing to swap phone numbers or move the conversation to WhatsApp or Instagram.
The feature adds a call icon in chat, letting users start audio or video calls, and it works through TikTok profiles and chats rather than phone numbers, with calls routed entirely through the app.
The addition puts the app in more direct competition with Meta’s messaging apps, which have offered calling for years.
The rollout has been staggered rather than announced with fanfare, which explains why some users have the option while their friends do not.
TikTok has added the audio calls feature specifically within its DM system, and reports suggest video calling is following a similar phased release tied to account type, region, and app version.

How to Check If You Have It
Availability depends on your account and location, so the first step is simply updating the app. Here is how to check or add the call function:
- Update TikTok to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open Direct Messages and select a conversation with a follower who follows you back.
- Look for a phone or video icon near the chat input bar.
- If it appears, tap it to start a call. Both users typically need the feature enabled on their end for it to work.
- If nothing shows up, check your privacy settings under “Who can call me,” since TikTok appears to let users toggle call permissions much like it does with DMs.
Not every account will see the option yet. The initial wave seems to exclude certain regions and account types, especially newer or lower-engagement profiles.
Users without the feature can, for now, keep using external apps to connect with contacts or simply wait for TikTok to widen access.
For creators, the feature could make it easier to sort out collaborations or field business inquiries without having to leave TikTok for another app. It is not yet clear whether Bytedance will go further and add group calls or paid fan calls, features Instagram and Snapchat already offer.
