Anyone familiar with traditional banking apps will open Absa Next expecting the usual features, such as checking account balances, making transfers, and applying for loans.
What they find instead is a lifestyle digital wallet that works without an Absa bank account. It offers features that the traditional banking app was not designed to provide.
The only thing it shares with the Absa Banking app is the Absa brand. Beyond that, the two products are quite different.
Absa Next operates in an increasingly competitive Kenyan market alongside M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and a growing number of digital-first wallets.
Its features include group savings, a rewards system that converts spending into cash, and lifestyle benefits. Together, these make it more of an everyday financial tool than a traditional banking app.

The everyday services reflect this approach directly. The app lets users borrow money, save, buy airtime, split bills, and request money, covering the small, regular financial tasks that people often manage across two or three different apps.
Two Wallets, One App
The app uses a dual-wallet structure.
The Personal Wallet is for everyday transactions, including sending and receiving money, borrowing, saving, and group contributions.
The BIZ Wallet is designed for small business owners. It gives each business its own name and number, along with a summary of its finances. It also supports QR payments, payment requests, and a monthly breakdown of money coming in and going out.
The two wallets are clearly separated, and switching between them is simple. This makes Absa Next useful for people who manage both their personal and small business finances from one app.

The Chama Feature
Group savings in Kenya have always been largely informal. Chamas and Harambees rely on trust, spreadsheets, and regular contributions from members.
Absa Next adds a digital layer to this system. Users can create or join savings groups, set targets, track how much has been raised, and see how much is still needed. Members can also invite others to join.
Invitations are sent by name, while progress is visible to everyone in the group. This gives the informal group structure a clear record of contributions and progress.
In Kenya, where Chamas collectively manage billions of shillings, moving this process into a digital wallet makes it easier for groups to coordinate and keep track of their savings.

Savings With Actual Returns
The savings product earns up to 7% annual interest, paid monthly. Users can also access their money when they need it without withdrawal penalties. It sits in a dedicated section of the app alongside Savings Goal and Savings Challenge.
There is also a weekly savings draw with a KES 100,000 prize, which leads into a monthly grand draw worth KES 1 million.
Entries are based on how actively users engage with the app. Users earn an entry by making at least five digital transactions a week, spending KES 1,000 or more on shopping, dining, or store purchases using their card, or depositing at least KES 10,000 in a week.
The more milestones a user completes, the more entries they earn. This makes the draw a reward for consistent use of the savings product rather than a simple lottery.

NEXT Coins and the Rewards Tier
Spending and saving in the app earns users NEXT Coins, which are grouped into three tiers: Silver, with 0 to 3,000 coins worth KES 0.25 each; Gold, with 3,000 to 6,000 coins worth KES 0.50 each; and Platinum, with more than 6,000 coins worth KES 0.75 each.
For example, a Platinum user with 6,515 coins has a total cash value of KES 2,636. Users can earn coins through deposits, payments, savings and loans, so the rewards are linked to regular activity in the app rather than one-off transactions.
The value of each coin increases with the user’s tier. At the Platinum level, each coin is worth three times more than it is at the Silver level.

Beyond the Transfers
Other features add to the app’s everyday usefulness without getting in the way.
You can top up airtime directly from the app, while bank-to-bank transfers make it easier for people who use accounts at multiple banks. The bill-splitting feature also comes in two forms.
Social Split lets you divide shared expenses among friends, while Installment Split lets you spread a single purchase across monthly payments.
The two options solve different problems, but they follow the same idea: managing money should fit the way people actually spend it.
How It Compares to the Competition
Against M-Pesa, which remains Kenya’s dominant mobile money platform, Absa Next is not trying to replace the existing infrastructure.
Instead, it builds on it with features that M-Pesa does not focus on, including structured group savings, tiered rewards, interest-bearing savings, and deals on food, shopping, movies, and transport.
M-Pesa does offer Chama and group savings features, but they are not as central to the product as they are with Absa Next.
Compared with Equity’s Eazzy Banking App and KCB’s mobile banking products, Absa Next puts more emphasis on lifestyle features and rewards. The idea is to make the app useful beyond everyday transactions.
What the Numbers Say
Absa Next is available on both Play Store and App Store. On Play Store, it has a 4.7 rating and more than 1,000 downloads. On App Store, it has a 3.3 rating from just four reviews.
Early Play Store reviews describe the app as quick, intuitive, and easy to navigate. One user described it as having “a money buddy in my pocket,” reflecting the app’s focus on making everyday banking simple.
The lower App Store rating could point to some issues on iOS that Android users have not reported so far. However, both sets of numbers are based on very few reviews, so it is premature to draw firm conclusions. How the ratings change as more people use the app will tell the full story.
Who Is It For?
Absa Next makes the most obvious sense for three groups:
- Small business owners who want to keep business and personal finances in the same app without them bleeding into each other
- Chama members who are tired of managing group contributions manually
- Existing Absa customers who want a rewards layer and lifestyle benefits without opening a second product
It is accessible without a traditional bank account, which also makes it a reasonable entry point for anyone who has been operating primarily on mobile money and wants a savings and rewards product alongside it.
