X (Twitter) is closing the book on Revenue Sharing, the ad-split program that has paid creators on the platform since 2023, and replacing it with a scheme called Original Content Rewards.
The company confirmed the change through its X Creators account, framing the shift as a reward for the accounts that make the platform worth opening rather than the ones that simply rack up views.
Revenue Sharing paid creators from ads shown in replies to their posts. This meant earnings depended less on the quality of a post and more on how many replies it generated from other verified users.
The system ended up rewarding posts that sparked arguments rather than posts that informed people. A calm, accurate tweet might get views, but a divisive or exaggerated one could attract people correcting it, arguing about it, or piling on, with each reply potentially carrying its own ad.

X tried to limit this by stopping payments for posts that received a Community Notes correction. However, this mainly targeted outright misinformation and did little to stop posts that were inflammatory without being false.
As a result, rage-bait, culture-war takes, and manufactured outrage became deliberate ways to make money rather than unintended side effects.

Revenue Sharing stopped accepting new members immediately once the announcement went out, and it retires fully on September 7, 2026. Creators already enrolled keep earning until that date, with a final payout landing on September 11.
Applications for Original Content Rewards open the day after Revenue Sharing closes, on September 8, giving creators barely 24 hours between one program ending and the next one taking applications.
Getting into the new program still runs through the same verification checks X already has on file.
Anyone who has completed ID verification and linked a valid payout method will not need to redo either step, and creators can check where they stand at any time through Creator Studio’s new Original Content Rewards tab.

The eligibility requirements are where X addresses the reply-farming problem. Creators now need an X Premium subscription, at least 500 verified followers, and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over a rolling 90-day period.
These requirements focus on the performance of the creator’s posts rather than the arguments happening in the replies, making it harder to benefit from provoking people just for engagement.
That is really the point of the whole overhaul. X says it wants to reward people who bring something original to the platform, such as breaking news, expert insight, or commentary that adds to the conversation.

The aim is to move away from accounts that farm outrage or repost other people’s content just to earn a share of ad revenue.
Originality now determines pay, not just how many people got dragged into a fight in the replies. Anyone relying on the platform for income has a small window to check their eligibility status and get their verification and payout details in order before the new program opens for good.
