Smartphone manufacturer Infinix is now expected to join the foldable device race with its very first foldable phone, dubbed the Infinix Zero Flip. This comes after reports went around about Infinix obtaining certification for a phone with the number X6962, whose design is thought to be that of a flip smartphone.
Nothing has been confirmed yet by Infinix despite the rumours. However, what is expected is that Infinix will look to create a foldable device that is affordable yet of good value, maintaining the brand’s reputation.
If this came to life, we could then see a rising competition for foldable smartphones that are easier to purchase compared to the high-end devices we have in the market right now.
There is clearly a rising demand for foldable phones globally as 2023 saw 15.9 million units shipped translating a 25% year-on-year increase. The numbers are expected to go even higher by the end of 2024 with the form factor’s market share also projected to grow to about 1.5% from the current 1.4% of the total smartphone market.
However, it is clear that most foldable smartphones are currently selling at prices that not many people can manage to afford. So we will just have to wait and see what kind of model Infinix comes up with and if they’ll break the current price mould in this market. One fear to have is whether the Infinix Zero Flip will be able to be affordable and still offer premium features that devices of this form factor tend to demand.
