Smartphone manufacturer Vivo seems set to get into the world of Extended Reality (XR) through a new mixed reality (MR) device.
The company confirmed these plans at the Imaging Festival event in China, where it detailed its vision for the future of mobile imaging. During the event, Vivo officially announced that it will launch its first-ever MR wearable headset in 2025.
At the stage, Vivo’s executive vice president, Hu Baishan, mentioned that the company has had an interest in MR technology as it envisions this as the next major advancement in mobile technology.
When it comes to XR, Vivo has tried to invest in this field through the AR smart glasses that it launched in 2019. However, the glasses were not a standalone device as they did not have mobile connectivity and required pairing with 5G smartphones to work.
The MR headset could be seen as an upcoming rival to Apple’s Vision Pro headset as many hope that it will offer an immersive and standalone experience.
There are also other brands rumoured to be developing their own MR headsets like Huawei and Oppo, although there are no confirmations yet.
We can only hope to see a Vivo device that competes with the highly acclaimed Apple Vision Pro come 2025. There are currently no details about what the headset will look like or its specifications, but it’s only a matter of time before reports come out about it.
