In a surprise cabinet reshuffle, President William Ruto has appointed former Kiambu County Boss, William Kabogo, to head the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Digital Economy.
He served as a Member of Parliament for Juja Constituency and later in 2013, as the first Governor of Kiambu County.
Known for his leadership and progressive approach, Kabogo’s tenure as governor saw significant infrastructural development and efforts to improve the county’s economic outlook.
In 2019, Mr. Kabogo argued about the telecommunications plan over the expiry of data bundles. He believed that consumers should be freed from what he viewed as economic servitude.
“You cannot sell me sugar and then attach a condition that if I will not have consumed it within a specified time frame then you will some to repossess I…” he was quoted in one of the Business Daily’s publications addressing the bundle expiry issue.
His appointment comes less than five months after Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u took over the office from Thursday, 8th of August 2024, as part of the broad-based government replacing Mr. Eliud Owalo.
During Owalo’s tenure, he spearheaded initiatives to enhance Kenya’s digital infrastructure, including the rollout of fiber optic cable, free public Wi-Fi hotspots, and various digital hubs to improve access to digital platforms and government services.
The Ministry of ICT has been central in the Ruto administration’s focus on digital inclusion and economic transformation.
Dr. Ndung’u has now been nominated as a High Commissioner in Ghana.
Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, through a press release, announced that His Excellency the President had forwarded the nominations for Cabinet Secretaries, High Commissioners, Ambassadors, and Permanent Representatives to the National Assembly for parliamentary consideration and approval.
“His Excellency The President has transmitted the nominations of Cabinet Secretaries, High Commissioners, Ambassadors, and Permanent Representatives to the National Assembly for consideration and approval by Parliament,” Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Felix Koskei, said.
