Nintendo has officially released Version 20.0.0 of the Nintendo Switch system software. This update introduces several new features and interface changes in anticipation of the Nintendo Switch 2 set to launch on June 5, 2025.
Additionally, this new version lays the groundwork for the next generation of gaming with Virtual Game Cards and GameShare.
How to Get the Update
In most cases, your Nintendo Switch will automatically download Version 20.0.0 when connected to the internet. If it doesn’t:
- Navigate to System Settings > System
- Scroll to System Update.
- Initiate the update manually.
Key Features of the Nintendo Switch 20.0.0 Update
Virtual Game Cards
One of the standout features in this update is the introduction of Virtual Game Cards. Now, all purchased digital games, DLCs, and select free titles are neatly organized in a dedicated Virtual Game Card menu on the HOME screen.
These virtual cards can be digitally loaded and ejected between up to two linked Nintendo Switch systems, offering a seamless way to manage your library.
In addition, they can be lent to other members within your Nintendo Account family group for up to two weeks.
GameShare
Nintendo is reviving the spirit of DS Download Play with GameShare, but this time it’s supercharged for Switch 2. This feature enables one console to locally share a game with up to three other nearby Switch 2 units via Wi-Fi.
GameShare is exclusive to the Switch 2 and will not work on the original Switch.
User Verification and License Settings
Nintendo has enhanced parental controls and account security with two new settings:
- User-Verification Settings let you protect the Virtual Game Card menu with a PIN or your Nintendo Account login.
- Online License Settings allow you to play purchased games and DLC without loading the virtual game card, as long as your console is connected to the internet.
These features offer more secure and flexible access to your games, especially helpful for shared family consoles.
For those getting ready to upgrade, the update introduces a simple System Transfer tool found in System Settings > System. It lets you move your Nintendo Account, save data, settings, and digital content from your current Switch to the new Switch 2.
There are two ways to do this: you can transfer directly using local wireless (best if you already have your new console) or upload the data to Nintendo’s servers if you’ll be without your old Switch before receiving the Switch 2.
Using the cloud method will reset your current Switch to factory settings after the upload. Both options require an internet connection and a Nintendo Account.
Interface and Visual Updates
The update also brings a bit of polish to the Switch’s familiar UI:
- Nintendo eShop and News icons on the HOME Menu now sport new color schemes.
- The term “Primary Console” has been replaced with “Pass-Enabled Console.”
- Some user icons have been visually updated for a fresher look.
- You can now select multiple save files at once when using the “Transfer Your Save Data” menu.
These updates aim to streamline the transition to the Switch 2 and enhance the digital gaming experience across Nintendo‘s console.
