The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a major upgrade to its iTax platform, allowing individual taxpayers to log in using their National ID numbers. This move is aimed at simplifying access, improving tax compliance, and enhancing service delivery.
This update comes just days after KRA unveiled two new systems, Independent Review of Objections (IRO) and Technical Review Unit (TRU).
Previously, taxpayers could only access the iTax portal using their Personal Identification Number (PIN). While that option remains available, the new update enables users to log in using their National ID number, a commonly used and easily accessible identifier for most Kenyans.
“Most Kenyans carry their ID card everywhere. Making it a login credential just makes sense,” said a KRA official during the launch.
This change is expected to reduce iTax login frustrations, especially for individuals who may have misplaced or forgotten their KRA PIN.
It also supports KRA’s larger goal of widening the tax base by encouraging informal sector participants and new taxpayers to interact more easily with the platform.
How to Log In to iTax with Your ID
- Visit the iTax portal.
- Select the new “Login with ID Number” option.
- Enter your National ID number and follow the instructions.
KRA has assured the public that this system update maintains robust data security protocols, safeguarding user credentials and personal information.
New Customs Dispute Systems Launched
In a separate but related move, KRA announced the rollout of two systems designed to improve the handling of customs-related objections: the Independent Review of Objections (IRO) and the Technical Review Unit (TRU). These will officially take effect this month.
Independent Review of Objections (IRO)
The IRO will provide a neutral platform for taxpayers to challenge customs decisions, such as duty classifications or valuation disputes. Crucially, this process will be handled independently of the initial decision-makers, promoting fairness and impartiality.
Technical Review Unit (TRU)
The TRU will act as an internal quality assurance team within KRA, reviewing customs decisions for technical accuracy and consistency. It is expected to improve the credibility of KRA’s customs operations and align them with international trade standards.
“The IRO and TRU represent a step forward in resolving disputes fairly and building trust with the trading community,” KRA said in a statement.
For traders and businesses, the IRO and TRU provide an improved framework for dispute resolution, encouraging fairness and boosting investor confidence.
