Samsung has launched two new mid-range phones in Kenya, namely the Galaxy A57 5G and Galaxy A37 5G, and for once, the upgrades are worth your time if not your money.
Both phones run on One UI 8.5 and come loaded with AI features Samsung is calling “Awesome Intelligence,” which is a collection of practical tools.
The Voice Recorder app can now transcribe and translate recordings automatically, useful for anyone sitting through meetings or lectures they’d rather not revisit manually.
A feature called AI Select lets you long-press the Edge Panel to pull text or images off the screen and drop them directly into notes or a photo editor, without the usual copy-paste gymnastics.
Circle to Search, Google’s feature that lets you circle something on screen to search it, now handles multiple objects at once. You can actually circle an entire outfit and search every piece of it in one go.
On the camera side, both phones use a triple-camera setup led by a 50MP main sensor. The improvement that matters most in everyday use is Nightography, Samsung’s low-light processing, which the company says has been improved on both devices.
The A57 5G gets additional enhancements, including faster shutter speed, better noise reduction, and a Best Face feature that works across more photos and burst shots, which is helpful for group photos where someone always blinks.
The A57 5G is the stronger of the two. It has a Super AMOLED+ display with slimmer bezels, a 5,000 mAh battery that Samsung says lasts up to 2 days, and Super Fast Charging 2.0 that gets the phone to 60% in about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, the processor has been upgraded across CPU, GPU, and NPU, and a 13% larger vapor chamber means the phone handles sustained tasks like gaming or long recording sessions without throttling as quickly.
Both phones are rated IP68, meaning they can handle submersion in water up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Security gets a proper hardware layer through Knox Vault, and there’s a new Private Album feature in the Gallery app that lets users lock away photos and videos.
A Privacy Alerts system proactively flags suspicious access to location data or other sensitive information, rather than waiting for users to dig through settings themselves.
Samsung is also promising 6 generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, plus 6 years of security updates. For a mid-range phone, that’s a really big deal.
