multichoice announces dstv now support for media players and smart tvs

Multichoice, the company known for its DStv brand has the DStv Now brand which you use to stream content on your Android and iOS device. This has now changed as the company has launched the DStv Now app to three new platforms.

The platforms that will now have DStv Now include Apple TVSamsung Smart TVs and media players running Android TV.

Multichoice was also quite specific on the type of devices that will be supported from the above categories. It will be supported on Apple TVs that are 4th generation and newer, Android TV media players that are Google certified devices only and select Samsung smart TVs from 2015 onwards.

Multichoice launched DStv Now 4 years ago as a mobile first product and that is why it had the Android and iOS app. “Over time, however, new usage cases have emerged such as providing an easy way to get all of DStv’s content to TVs not connected to a decoder,” they said.

Currently DStv Now is available to DStv customers and it is linked to their customer’s DStv package. The service allows you to have two different streams being viewed on separate devices, so with the expanded supported devices, someone would watch something on the TV while another watches something totally different on phone.

This is a good move for Multichoice as they seek to compete effectively with other streaming services like Netflix and iFlix.

“What surprised us is how popular it has been as a method of getting DStv content onto other TVs around the home,” Mark Rayner, Multchoice South Africa’s COO said. “By adding these new apps, we’ve made that process a whole lot easier and more convenient – no fussing with cables or casting, and no decoder needed.”

  1. So from now is the dstv now app available on Samsung tv sets year 2015 onwards in Kenya? As I know Sony Android TV sets already work

  2. I am very interested in this especially if they unbundle the decoder bit,i want to watch EPL matches the legit way and if they can offer us an “EPL” skinny bundle going for $15 per month package subscription for DSTV now it would really be a compelling reason to go legit on EPL…I dont want to buy a decoder,i just want to setup a DSTV account quickly, pay via MPESA for the package and the content is unlocked for me to stream on My Android tv….
