Facebook has announced the launch of the Community Accelerator programme which will be available in three countries in sub Saharan Africa: Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

This is an evolution of the Facebook Community Leadership Programme where from a pool of 6,000 applicants, 115 people were selected. Among the people selected included 6 Kenyans.

According to Facebook, the Accelerator will be a six-month programme that will provide training, mentorship and funding to help community leaders grow their communities. The selected leaders will spend 3 months learning from experts, coaches and a customized curriculum to grow their communities. The following 3 months will be spent iterating and executing their plans. They will award up to $3 million to 80 participants worldwide.

This is one of the ways Facebook is investing in community leaders who have huge groups on the network. Facebook has been focusing on groups on the network which attract people of similar interest who will have meaningful conversations. They have added new tools to add new members and moderate conversations in these groups.

“We are investing in leaders because we believe and know they will make significant contributions to today’s social challenges, by sharing knowledge and information and helping people connect with others that share interests or passions for a good cause,” said Kiran Yoliswa, Strategic Partner Manager for Sub Saharan Africa at Facebook.

Interested leaders can apply to be a part of the accelerator here before 10th April 2020. You need to be 18 years or older from the selected countries (Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria). The programme will begin in June 2020.
