Today, Safaricom has updated its MySafaricom App with a couple of new features.
The utility app, which is one of Kenya’s most downloaded apps alongside the M-PESA app, is robust and continues to be useful for the operator’s more than 33 million customers. This is because its features are better than what the M-PESA app offers (deliberately so since it is just that – a tool to access the carrier’s mobile money service).
Requesting another person to share data
We have seen how the ‘request for money’ feature works on the M-PESA app. It is the same implementation here, but now, customers will be able to ask their friends and family to share data with them.
This is key because Safaricom crippled the Sambaza data feature more than five years ago after people started abusing the service.
Its replacement, which we have looked into before, allows one party to share data bundles with them if the recipient is added as a beneficiary by the sender.
Even better is that postpay customers can now share data with their friends, which is handy because there are cases when some customers do not exhaust their allocation.

Roaming bundles
Some people travel abroad many times, and on those trips, they choose to keep their Safaricom lines active.
Now, such groups will be able to buy roaming bundles right from the MySafaricom app.
Safaricom Shop
While social media is the best way to engage Safaricom in case of an issue, there are some instances when you will be forced to visit a Safaricom Shop.
The MySafaricom app now allows customers to locate the nearest shop near them for customer care services.
Easy Talk Bundles
This appears to be a new service that hasn’t been talked about by the telco.
It is basically for customers who make a lot of phone calls, and want to buy minutes/SMS and nothing on top.
It is not the same as Postpay because the latter includes other units such as data bundles.
There are three plans to choose from:
300 MINS and 500 SMS for KES 500
800 MINS and 1000 SMS for KES 1000
1700 MINS and 5000 SMS for KES 2000
Validity is 30 days for all the plans.
To find the product, open your MySafaricom App, navigate to ‘Data, Calls, SMS and Airtime,’ and you will see it among the displayed options.
