Getting unsolicited nude content on your DMs is the worst part of Instagram and the company is now working to fix that.
Instagram is calling it Nudity Protection and it will securely detect and cover photos that may contain nudity in the chat. This will be an optional feature as the photos will remain covered unless you want to view them.
Meta, Instagram’s parent company adds that this technology is on-device and that they will not view the actual messages and also not share with third parties.
“We’re working closely with experts to ensure these new features preserve people’s privacy while giving them control over the messages they receive,” a Meta spokesperson shared.
When the Nudity Protection feature is enabled, Instagram will blur the photo attached in the chat if it detects it has nudity – this will be done automatically. You will then get a notification that the message you’ve received has a photo that contains nudity with the option to access the content if you want.
