Corning has launched Gorilla Glass 7i designed to protect the screens of budget and midrange smartphones.
Corning Gorilla Glass 7i is Gorilla Glass Victus but for midrange and budget smartphones. Gorilla Victus was launched 7 years ago and thus the 7 and i in the name. The new cover glass will safeguard the more affordable Android smartphones against scratches and drops.
The company showcased the glass undergoing durability tests in its lab including being dropped from a meter high on an asphalt-like floor. The company says that the Gorilla Glass 7i is two times tough compared to other cover glasses.
OPPO will be the first to put the Gorilla Glass 7i on its upcoming phones.
“Durability remains a primary concern for anyone with a mobile device. Purchasing a smartphone is a significant investment, and Gorilla Glass 7i allows more consumers to protect their purchase by providing advanced toughness for value and intermediate devices at an affordable price point,” said David Velasquez, Corning Gorilla Glass VP and GM.
Corning recently unveiled the latest Gorilla Armor exclusively for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, delivering both enhanced toughness and improved visibility in sunlight by minimizing reflections by as much as 75%. The company said that Armor is more scratch-resistant than Victus while still offering anti-glare that cuts off reflections when you’re outdoors without the need to raise the screen’s brightness.
It’s worth noting that Gorilla Glass 7i will sit between Gorilla Glass 5 and the Victus lineup that includes the Victus, Victus+ and VIctus 2. A lot of midrange phones have launched using Gorilla Glass 5 such as the Redmi Note 13 series. Gorilla Glass 5 was launched eight years ago so switching to the newer Glass 7i would be more durable for both the screen and the glass back for newer smartphones.
