CrowdStrike latest update is causing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crisis that is affecting operations across the world. The issue is affecting computers running various CrowdStrike sensor versions. The faulty update leads to a BSOD error causing systems to suddenly shutdown or restart in persistent boot loops. Both Microsoft and CrowdStrike, which produces antivirus software, have confirmed this.
“We’re aware of a widespread issue causing BSOD errors on Windows machines across various sensor versions,” a CrowdStrike representative stated. The company’s CEO, George Kurtz has also posted on X.
Microsoft said, “We’re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming.”
The bug has affected several companies, banks and government offices across the globe. Media reports indicate that a number of McDonalds stores in japan are not working. In India, operations of most airlines have been affected. Sky News network has also been offline this morning in the UK due the issue. The channel’s usual live morning programme is not on-air and replaced by a documentary. The UK’s National Health System is currently only attending to acute cases. The patients are getting handwritten notes.
In Australia, the Bendingo Bank among other banks have been affected. Retail sector is also hit with supermarkets facing disruptions. Virgin Australia is also affected stating, “We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”
American Airlines has said no flights are being allowed to take off while United Airlines stated, “A third party software outage is impacting computer systems worldwide, including at United. Switzerland’s largest airport in Zurich also says planes are not allowed to land.
Global logistics problems go beyond aviation. Poland’s biggest container terminal in Gdansk has confirmed operational challenges. The railway companies in the UK have always warned of delays due to the IT systems outage. In the US state of Alaska, police warn the 911 system may be unavailable.
CrowdStrike Solution to the Error
CrowdStrike has promised that engineers are working on a fix. Hence, there’s no need for users to contact support for now. Users should expect a Technical Alert (TA) detailing the problem and potential workarounds. This is expected to be published shortly by CrowdStrike. In addition, CrowdStrike’s official forum will have a pinned thread to provide users with easy access to updates and information.
Cybersecurity companies are working with clients to resolve or bypass the issue. “We’ve got a notification from CrowdStrike. One of their products, or part of their products, Falcon Sensor, has an issue, which there’s limited information about what the problem actually is, but it’s definitely causing blue screens of death, which is basically putting machines into lock down and attempting to reboot,” said Mark Jones, a senior partner at cyber security firm Tesserent.
If your computer abruptly restarts or displays a blue screen (sometimes it can be black), it might be due to a serious problem. This is called a Blue Screen error, and it forces Windows to shut down to prevent damage. BSOD can also be caused by poorly written device drivers. Hardware malfunctioning such as overheating of components or power supply issues could also lead to BSOD error.
