Apple recently scrapped the Sketch style option from its Image Playground, which it had previously announced as part of its creative tools suite The feature in IOS 18 would allow users to create custom images in three distinct styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. However, the beta versions of iOS 18.2 show that the Sketch style option has been removed.
The reasons behind this change are unclear. Apple hasn’t officially commented on whether the Sketch style might return or if it’s a permanent decision. The remaining styles, Animation and Illustration, are still available, giving users some flexibility in image customization options across apps like Messages and Notes.
The removal of the Sketch style surprised many users, who expected it to be a standout feature in Apple’s creative tools. Speculation suggests that technical limitations or design challenges may have made it difficult to maintain the desired quality and consistency
This feature removal has sparked some discussion, as the Sketch style was considered ideal for quick, hand-drawn effects with the Apple Pencil. Users who previewed the feature appreciated the style’s unique qualities for personalizing notes or images playfully. However, with the ongoing development of iOS 18.2, Apple may make further adjustments based on user feedback as they finalize the release, expected in December
Apple recently updated the description for the Style section of its Image Playground app, aligning it to reflect only two style options. However, one instance mistakenly still mentions three style choices at the top. Stating, “Image Playground, powered by Apple Intelligence, lets you turn descriptions, concepts, or people from your photo library into original, fun images in three unique styles.”
