The approaching end of Windows 10, long known as one of the most stable operating systems, is starting to cause problems for its maker, Microsoft, which may soon have its legal team busier than usual as the support deadline gets closer.
One of the issues is a new lawsuit filed in California by Windows 10 user Lawrence Klein. He is asking the court to require Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10 without extra fees or conditions until the number of devices using it drops to a reasonable level.
Klein owns two laptops that run Windows 10, but neither meets the high hardware requirements for Windows 11. As a result, both devices will become obsolete in just eight weeks.
Klein believes that ending support for Windows 10 will be very harsh, not just for him but also for the 240 million PCs that cannot be upgraded.
He says this decision will force users to spend unexpected amounts of money on new devices and extended support. According to him, it will cut off users who make up more than half of the Windows operating system market share.
While Microsoft will have to defend itself against the lawsuit, the company has previously admitted that it will lose millions of users who are not able to buy new devices or pay for extended support.
As it stands, about 700 million Windows users are set to go dark in October and have no choice but to upgrade to ensure their devices are safe from cyberattacks.
Klein adds that this strategy by Microsoft “will have the effect of jeopardizing data security, not only of Microsoft’s customers but also of persons who may not use Microsoft’s products at all.”
As per the claim, Klein demands that Microsoft continue supporting Windows 10 and give users more time to upgrade until less than 10% of the user base is left using Windows 10. Given the numbers, this will require Microsoft to give them a lot of time, which will be difficult.
So, will Microsoft extend the deadline for Windows 10 and give people more time to upgrade to Windows 11? Well, we’ll have to see how the case goes.
