I am liking the entry level smartphone wars as it stands. With yesterday’s launch of the Galaxy Pocket, Orange later in the evening announced the Huawei Gaga, or the Huawei X1, or the Ideos U8180, whichever name you associate with best. Huawei Gaga is priced at well low than the Galaxy Pocket, this being Kshs. 8,799 and some date goodies added to it.
This is a 3G phone with the below main specs:
- Android 2.2 Froyo
- 2.8 inch TFT Capacitive touchscreen with a 240 x 320 pixels display

So according to Orange, the target consumers are middle income earners and availability is at all Orange shops in the country. It will be available with a one month unlimited internet connection on activation. Mikael Ghossein says that affordability of smartphones is critical to pushing the country’s internet penetration beyond current 8% rate. Like I noted a time back, power to the consumer!
What do you think about Huawei Gaga?
Seems a good phone.Good for entry level smartphone users.I got issue with reviews im getting online though. Not very appealing especially on handling multiple applications at the same time. The phone is quite thirsty too for that battery. The price point may be a factor for most customers though to go for the phone. However the pocket beats it hands down when it comes to processor and android version too.By the way Martin is android 2.2 upgradable? The camera looks cool though for the Gaga at 3.15MP..Not very bad for the price..I would still fork some more cash and go for the pocket though..And then Huawei isnt speaking of warranty terms.Samsung looks quite attractive though I have heard some complaints they have got a lousy service centre team..see todays Money magazine in the DN. As you said power to the consumer! We have got choice now.
Paul I have heard no word about upgradability past 2.2 as yet. And like you said, I also noted the memory is low, so handling multiple applications open would be a task. Battery use I would have to actually play with it to confirm. Camera quality too.
I am trying to compare this phone with the Galaxy pocket and I can gladly fork out a few extra thousand shillings for the Pocket and not this one. It is appealing to the eye but the specs are a no no. The processor is my main point of argument. The Android version is not a problem, this can be easily upgraded. The battery also; 1500mAh should be the standard minimum for entry-level smartphone. From my experiences with the IDEOS U8150 sometimes back, the battery really drains faster.
Orange are ridiculous, while the Ideos U8150 is EOL at Safaricom, they decide to dish out the Gaga, which has very similar features to the Ideos U8150 ….and to make it worse at a higher price. Should we expect devices like the SIII from for the sake of competition?
Been waiting for this device for two weeks now but it seems it’s not forthcoming, wanted to bad to compare it with the Galaxy Pocket and LG L3, both which I already have but seems it’s not forthcoming.
