Apple, currently the world most valuable company, is facing another lawsuit. Bloomberg reports that The Justice Department is set to open a case against the company this Thursday. Antitrust regulations are being brought against the tech company for limiting rivals’ ability to develop apps and functionalities for iPhones. This is deemed to potentially harm consumer choice.
In recent years, the US government has in the stepped up the fight against tech giants. Currently, the Justice Department suing Google and the FTC taking on Meta and Amazon in antitrust cases. Apple’s lawsuit is expected to be filed in Federal court.
The Justice Department is suing Apple for antitrust violations again, marking the third time in 14 years. However, this case breaks new ground by accusing Apple of illegal tactics to maintain its dominance.
Its not purely a Biden administration initiative to take on big tech. The Justice Department initiated this latest Apple case in 2019. This was during the Trump administration. However, the antitrust division focused its efforts on pursuing Google in separate lawsuits. This allowed Epic Games, creator of Fortnite, to take the lead by suing Apple over antitrust concerns in 2020, with that case progressing through the court system.
Apple is currently facing a class action suit for negligence and product liability. This particular case is in a California District court and was filed by 3 plaintiffs.
