Customers wishing to buy and top up their electricity tokens have been notified of a scheduled system disruption. The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), states that the temporary service interruption will impact electricity token purchases across all channels, including Kenya Power offices, M-PESA Paybill number 888880, Airtel Money, and banking platforms.
“We wish to inform our customers that the prepaid token vending system will be unavailable from 10:00 PM, Sunday, 2nd June to 10:00 PM, Monday, 3rd June to enable us to upgrade our systems for improved service delivery,” reads part of KPLC’s statement.
The utility company has urged all customers using its prepaid meters to top up well in advance of this period. In addition, customers are urged to top up enough tokens to last the preplanned outage.
Earlier in the year, the power retailer announced that the prepaid meters are running on a software that is set to be rendered obsolete by November 24th this year. Hence, all the meters are due a software upgrade before this deadline.
The KPLC prepaid power meters that don’t get the upgrade will cease to be of use to the customers as topping up tokens will be impossible. Further, after the upgrade the prepaid meters will not accept old tokens.
