Microsoft Teams Updates its deadline for Windows Users

Microsoft has set a January 2025 deadline for users of unsupported operating systems. This affects those still using Windows 10 versions and various older versions of macOS. Beginning January 15, 2025, users on unsupported OS versions will be blocked from using the Microsoft Teams desktop client until they update to a supported version. This step has raised a lot of concerns about the ongoing transition to Windows 11.

Users will soon start receiving alerts prompting them to update their operating systems to maintain support. In just a few months, Microsoft Teams will completely lose functionality on versions that are not supported.

The move aims to ensure that all users have access to the latest features, security updates, and overall improved performance. Starting in October 2024, users will receive notifications indicating that their current OS version is unsupported. This alert serves as a reminder to upgrade to a supported operating system to ensure continued access to Microsoft Team. Microsoft encourages users to transition to newer systems. This, includes Windows 11, which offers enhanced security features and better compatibility with modern software.

Impact on Your Organization

For New Teams Users on Windows 10 OS Versions Below 19041:

Starting October 15, 2024, users will see a notification banner in the Teams desktop client indicating they are using an unsupported OS version, along with a link for more information.

After January 15, 2025, the client will display a blocking message, preventing access until users update to a supported OS version.

For New Teams Users on Windows 10 or Windows 11 LTSC Versions:

Starting October 15, 2024, users on unsupported LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) versions will receive a notification banner in the Teams desktop client.

Beginning August 15, 2025, access will be blocked, and an update to a supported version will be mandatory to continue using the Teams client

For New Teams Users on macOS Versions 11 (Big Sur) and Older:

Starting October 15, 2024, users on these versions will receive a notification banner regarding their unsupported status.

On November 15, 2024, a blocking message will appear, requiring an OS update to retain access.

For New Teams Users on macOS 12 (Monterey):

  • Users will be notified starting November 15, 2024, about their unsupported OS version.
  • Access will be blocked after March 15, 2025, until they upgrade to a supported
  • version.
