American social media company Meta has released AI-powered translation for creators on Instagram and Facebook, enabling reels to be dubbed into different languages with automatic lip syncing.
The feature is designed to maintain the same tone and style after translation, using the creator’s original voice, while also aligning lip movements with the dubbed audio.
Right now, the feature only works for English to Spanish translations, but more languages will be added soon. On Facebook, it is available only to creators with at least 1,000 followers, while on Instagram it will be available to all public accounts.
To enable the AI translation features, creators will have to select “Translate your voice with Meta AI” while posting the reel, then turn on the translations and lip-syncing toggles and preview before publishing.
Viewers can automatically see Instagram reels in their preferred language, but they can also disable translations from the settings. Creators also gain access to audience insights segmented by language, helping track performance across regions.
This is also meant to help them see how their content reaches new audiences through translations. It will become even more useful as more languages are supported in the future.
According to Meta, creators who wish to use the translation feature should face forward, speak audibly and avoid covering their mouth when shooting. Background noise or music should also be at its minimum for the AI-powered feature to work effectively.
The feature only supports up to two speakers, and they should not talk over each other for the translation to work.
“We believe there are lots of amazing creators out there who have potential audiences who don’t necessarily speak the same language,” explained Instagram head Adam Mosseri in an Instagram post.
“And if we can help you reach those audiences who speak other languages, reach across cultural and linguistic barriers, we can help you grow your following and get more value out of Instagram and the platform.”
