Spotify has officially rolled out Messages, a brand-new feature that lets users share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly with friends and family inside the app.
The move makes Spotify more social, allowing users to chat and react to content.
Instead of switching to WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram to talk about a song, Spotify now gives listeners a dedicated space to continue the conversation where it starts inside the music.
How Spotify Messages Work
Messages are one-on-one conversations where you can:
- Share Spotify content instantly from the Now Playing view.
- React with emojis and text to songs, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- Keep the conversation going by seamlessly sharing content back and forth.
Starting a conversation is simple:
- Tap the share icon in the Now Playing view.
- Select a friend you’ve interacted with on Spotify before.
- Hit send; the message will land in their inbox.
Once your friend accepts the request, you can freely exchange music, emojis, and text. Messages can be accessed through your profile photo in the top-left corner of the app.
Who Can You Message?
Spotify makes it easy to connect with people you already share music experiences with. Suggested contacts may include:
- Friends you’ve shared tracks or playlists with before.
- People you’ve joined Jams, Blends, or collaborative playlists with.
- Family or Duo plan members.
This ensures the feature feels personal and familiar, centered on the people you already enjoy music with.
Another Big Spotify Update: Price Hikes & Growth
The launch of Spotify Messages isn’t happening in isolation. Spotify recently confirmed that Premium subscription prices are increasing across multiple global regions, including Africa.
According to Spotify’s Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom, the price hikes are part of a long-term strategy to balance growth and support new features like Messages.
Even amid pricing adjustments, Q2 2025 saw Spotify hit 276 million Premium subscribers, growing 12% year-over-year, with 696 million Monthly Active Users and €4.2 billion in revenue.
These strong numbers show that users continue to stick with Spotify even as the platform evolves beyond just music streaming. While some users welcome the convenience, others argue it’s “feature creep” and would rather see the long-awaited HiFi (lossless audio) tier.
