Google’s free Gmail accounts come with 15 GB of storage, shared between Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.
When your storage limit is reached, Gmail stops sending and receiving messages, Google Drive uploads won’t go through, and Google Photos syncing comes to a standstill.
For many users, the obvious solutions are to delete files or buy extra storage through Google One. But what if you don’t want to delete anything, and you’re not ready to pay for more space?
This guide walks you through what to do next, including how to switch your default account and continue using Google services.
Step 1: Check What’s Using Your Storage
Before you decide, it’s helpful to see where your space went. Head to Google One’s Storage Manager; it shows exactly how much space Gmail, Drive, and Photos are consuming.
You may notice the following:
- Large email attachments pile up in Gmail.
- The drive may be full of old documents, videos, or backups.
- Google Photos eats space if you’ve been uploading in original quality.
If you’re open to cleaning up, you can delete large files, empty spam/trash, or compress photos to Storage Saver. But, if you don’t want to delete anything, skip to the next step.
Step 2: Understand Your Options
When Gmail is full, you have three main options forward:
- Upgrade storage: Google One offers plans starting at 100 GB.
- Free up space: Manually delete emails, files, and media.
- Switch to a new default Gmail account: Keep your full account as an archive, and use a fresh one for new emails.
Since we’re avoiding both deletion and extra costs, switching accounts is the best option.
Step 3: Switch Your Default Gmail Account
On a Computer (Web Browser)
- Sign out of all accounts: In Gmail, click your profile picture (top-right) > Sign out of all accounts.
- Log in first with your new account: The first one you log into becomes your default for that browser session.
- Add your full account back as secondary: You’ll still have access to old emails, but new emails will now go to your fresh inbox.
On Mobile (Android/iOS)
The Gmail app doesn’t have a permanent “default account” setting, but you can switch the main Google account for your device.
- Open Settings > Google > Manage accounts on this device.
- Remove your current main account (your emails remain safe in the cloud).
- Add your new Gmail account first; it becomes the default for Gmail, the Play Store, and other Google services.
- Re-add your old account so you can still view your older emails anytime.
Step 4: Keep Both Accounts in Sync
To avoid missing important emails:
- Enable email forwarding: In your old Gmail, go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP and forward new emails to your fresh account.
- Use multiple inbox view: Both Gmail’s app and web allow you to see multiple accounts side by side, making it easy to stay on top of both.
By switching your default Gmail account, you give yourself a clean slate for new emails while still keeping your old account as an accessible archive.
