OpenAI is preparing to shake up social media once again, this time with a new short-form video app that could feel a lot like TikTok, except there’s a big twist.
Instead of user-uploaded content, the feed will be made up entirely of AI-generated videos created with OpenAI’s latest text-to-video model, Sora 2.
The upcoming app will borrow heavily from the vertical, swipe-based format that made TikTok addictive, complete with personalized recommendation feeds.
The difference is that every video, around 10 seconds long, will be created by AI. For users, this means endless scrolling through clips that don’t rely on human uploads but on prompts and generative models working behind the scenes.
How Will OpenAI Deal With Deepfakes?
One of the biggest concerns around AI video is the misuse of people’s likeness. To address this, OpenAI is reportedly developing an identity verification system. Users who opt in will be able to approve or deny the use of their likeness in generated content.
Beyond that, they’ll also get notified if their image appears in a draft video, giving them transparency and control before anything goes public.
Another contentious issue is copyright. OpenAI plans to roll out an opt-out system, meaning creators and rights holders will have to actively request their work not be used in AI-generated videos.
That approach will likely become controversial, though the company has stated it will restrict the use of recognizable public figures unless explicit permission is granted.
The app is currently being tested internally at OpenAI, though no public release date has been confirmed. With TikTok facing regulatory scrutiny in several countries, OpenAI sees this as an opportunity to step in with a fresh alternative powered entirely by AI.
The big question is whether audiences will actually enjoy a feed made up entirely of “fake” videos. On one hand, AI can generate an endless stream of imaginative, surreal, and entertaining clips.
On the other hand, some people might feel that without real human creators, the experience becomes too artificial.
